Charley Casserly, former Texans GM now NFL Network media analyst, thinks the Texans should take Jadeveon Clowney at #1.
Here’s the link to the video which has Casserly saying a few interesting things.
Casserly opens up saying that, “you have to make the your decision based on what’s right for your team.” Of course, everyone remembers Casserly as the Texans GM that selected Mario Williams over players like Reggie Bush and Vince Young. Not only was the pick the best pick for the team, he also made the correct choice when looking back at the 2006 NFL Draft.
About this year’s Texans first overall pick? Casserly believes the Texans will take Jadeveon Clowney at #1.
He mentions that Mack is probably a better fit in the 3-4 defense than Clowney and may be a “cleaner” pick than Clowney, considering the work ethic questions. However, he says, “I’d be very surprised if they didn’t take Clowney. I would take Clowney, and you make him work in your defense. If he’s playing your defense, and if he ever turns his shoulders and goes backwards, that offensive tackle is cheering now because he doesn’t have to block him that play.” Later on in the clip, Casserly again drives home the point that the Texans would have to have Clowney rush the quarterback and going forwards, rather than dropping back. The other interesting part of this mock draft is the fact that Casserly believes Johnny Manziel will fall into the second round. He thinks that Manziel will certainly not be a top-10 pick, and then you drop all the way to the Cleveland Browns at #26 when they are expected to select a quarterback. If it’s not Manziel, it’s possible he drops out of the first round completely, barring a trade into the late 20’s, early 30’s.
If the Texans are able to come out with Jadeveon Clowney and Johnny Manziel, I’m sure many members of the Texans management and their fans would be absolutely thrilled.
