Valdes, 36, finished with a 12.27 ERA and 2.18 WHIP in 3.2 innings pitched. He somehow managed to make eight different appearances, not getting a single out in two of them. He had one save this season, to go along with a hold and a blown save. The writing was on the wall once the Astros signed LHP Tony Sipp to a major-league deal.
Downs, 29, holds a 4.34 career MLB ERA in 56 total innings with the Detroit Tigers. The lefty was with the Oklahoma City RedHawks to start the season and amassed a 5.54 ERA in 13 innings with the club. Downs was claimed by the Astros early in the offseason in hopes of finding a serviceable LOOGY. He’ll have his shot now, but don’t expect him to have a long leash.
