The Houston Texans will be on the clock in exactly a week from now, and apparently the Texans already know who they plan on selecting.
Texans GM Rick Smith had some interesting things to say in an interview with Fox Sports Southwest.
“I absolutely know who I want, I know the guys we like. The fortunate thing about having the first pick is I’ve got the pick of the litter, so I will know exactly who I want at that point.”
Many expect the Texans to select Jadeveon Clowney with the first pick, but there’s always a chance the Texans can look to upgrade at quarterback. There’s also the possible opportunity of trading down, something the Texans will likely entertain until they’re forced to make their pick.
The Atlanta Falcons have already been mentioned as a potential trading partner, with the Texans likely looking for at least the #6 and #37 overall picks this season, plus another future first rounder. The Texans will also be looking for more picks in the first through third rounds according to John McClain (Houston Chronicle). The #33 is a very valuable pick in which all 29 other teams will be able to assess their draft board and inquire with the Texans on the availability of the pick. There’s a solid chance the Texans trade the pick and pick up another second rounder plus an additional third or fourth rounder, and use one of their extra late round picks to beef up the deal.
Rick Smith has always been active in trade circles around draft time and I certainly expect him to make at least one deal during the next weekend.
