Official: Houston Astros To Sign Tony Sipp

Dennis Lin (UT San Diego) says the Astros are signing Tony Sipp to a Major League deal.

Astros officially announce the signing of Tony Sipp. They optioned Paul Clemens to Triple-A and transferred Jesse Crain to the 60-day DL.

Sipp, 30, holds a career 3.84 ERA in 258 innings pitched across five seasons. Sipp signed with the San Diego Padres this past offseason, but never played at the Major League level. He spent April with their Triple-A affiliate in El Paso, and held a 4.30 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched.

Though his ERA seems rather average, he held a 21/2- K/BB ratio and a 1.09 WHIP while facing 61 batters at the Triple-A level this season. The left-hander will provide valuable experience for a young Astros bullpen that currently holds a 5.86 ERA, good (or bad) for the worst in the MLB.

The Astros are off today and will likely take their time in announcing the move. Expect to hear something from one of the Astros beat writers over the next 24 hours.

Also, check out what Tyler Stafford (Climbing Tal’s Hill) had to say back in December, when he suggested the Astros take a look at Sipp.
