Tracy McGrady Makes Sugar Land Skeeters Opening Day Roster

According to Chris Cotillo (MLB Daily Dish), Tracy McGrady has made the Sugar Land Skeeters Opening Day roster. Mark Berman (MyFox26) confirmed the report.

The former Houston Rockets star is trying his hand in baseball, after retiring from basketball a few months ago. Manager of the Sugar Land Skeeters, Gary Gaetti, told Berman, “Tracy is on the team. He’s just done what needed to be done since the idea came about. He showed enough progress. He showed enough ability and we’re going to see where this goes.”

He’s just done what needed to be done since the idea came about.
McGrady has been working with Roger Clemens and was reportedly throwing in the mid 80’s in February. In an exhibition game against Alvin Community College he allowed one run on three hits in one inning of action, throwing 9 of his 15 pitches for strikes. Gaetti told Berman he knew there was a good chance McGrady would make the team. He believes that the former Rockets All-Star has the ability to pitch well for the Skeeters.

McGrady, 34, last played in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs (2013), but is most well known for his time with the Houston Rockets (2004-2010). The 7-time All-Star also played for the Toronto Raptors (1997-2000), Orlando Magic (2000-2004), New York Knicks (2010), Detroit Pistons (2010-2011), and the Atlanta Hawks (2011-2012). He finished his career averaging 19.6 points per game.

The Sugar Land Skeeters will open up their season this Thursday night at Constellation Field with the Lancaster Barnstormers coming to town.

Here’s some video of McGrady from earlier in the offseason.
