Houston Rockets Sign Dexter Pittman; Waive Greg Smith

The Houston Rockets will sign Dexter Pittman and waive Greg Smith according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.

Pittman, 26, was last with the Atlanta Hawks in February before being released five days after joining the Hawks. He averages 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in just under 7 minutes throughout his career. The Rockets will be signing Pittman for the rest of this season as well as next season, though next season is non-guaranteed.

The Rockets needed another big man with Smith out. Smith underwent surgery in late February and they gave Smith a chance to recover before making their decision. With Dwight Howard still out, Pittman is expected to backup Omer Asik. Don’t expect Pittman to see any minutes in the playoffs if both Howard and Asik are healthy.

Smith, 23, went undrafted free agent out of Fresno State. He averaged 9 minutes a game, scoring 3.5 ppg, grabbing 2.5 rpg, while shooting a career-best 64.3% from the field. He was never able to fully recover from a right knee sprain he suffered earlier in the season and only appeared in 11 games for the Rockets this season.

It’s unfortunate to see a guy like Smith be waived, but the NBA is a business. Though Smith is the better player, the Rockets could use an extra big man on the roster, and the former Longhorn center does bring some NBA Finals experience from his time with the Miami Heat.
