Breaking: Kelvin Sampson Reaches Five Year Deal To Coach Cougars Basketball

Adrian Wojnarowski and Pat Forde (Yahoo Sports) were the first to report a potential deal between Kelvin Sampson and the University of Houston. Today, Wojnarowski reports the deal is going to happen.

Jeff Goodman (ESPN) was the first to report the terms.

It’s all but official now as we wait for Sampson to officially put the ink on paper.

Sampson, 58, is currently the Rockets top assistant coach but is expected to immediately take over the Cougars program once the deal is official.

Sampson previously coached at the college level at Washington State, Oklahoma and Indiana and has reached the NCAA tournament 13 times in his career.

In the NBA, Sampson was the assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks as well as the Houston Rockets. Sampson interviewed for head coaching jobs with Milwaukee and Charlotte last offseason.

Kellen Sampson, Kelvin’s son, is expected to be hired as an assistant coach as well. Kellen had been an assistant coach at Appalachian State for the last three years.

Sampson replaces James Dickey who resigned earlier last month.
