Houston Astros Release Cesar Izturis; Marwin Gonzalez Makes Squad; Zeid Optioned

The Houston Astros had a decision to make whether or not to keep Cesar Izturis. Today, the veteran shortstop was told he would not be making the team, therefore making Marwin Gonzalez the team’s utility infielder.

Izturis, 34, batted .269 with 3 RBI in 26 at-bats during Spring Training. The Astros decided they preferred the younger Gonzalez who batted a blistering .395 with 7 doubles and 6 RBI in 43 at-bats. With teams still looking for shortstop help, Izturis should have no problem finding work shortly.

Here’s what Astros GM Jeff Luhnow had to say to Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle about Izturis and Gonzalez:

“It was a real opportunity and we were genuine in bringing him in for that opportunity. There are a lot of teams out there that have expressed interest in middle infielders, so I’m pretty sure he’ll land on his feet pretty quickly. The mentorship even that he provided this spring was valuable, it was valuable having him here. Correa got to spend time with him, Villar got to spend time with him, (Jose) Altuve got to spend time with him and Marwin. All four of those guys benefited … even though it was only a month and a half it definitely helped.”

“Marwin did a tremendous job this spring, and earned himself a spot on this team, so we told him today. He was nervous when he came in the room (to talk), as they normally are. Marwin did a tremendous job and pretty much won himself that job.”

The Astros also (shockingly) announced that Josh Zeid was sent down.

Zeid, who just turned 27 today, had a 4.15 ERA and 12 K’s in 8.2 innings pitched this Spring. It’s a bit of a surprise but Zeid still has options which likely lead to his “demotion”. Sometimes it’s not about who is the better player, but rather which players works better for the front office. Zeid will be the first relief pitcher called up if a need arises.

J.D. Martinez signed a minor-league deal today with the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers had interest in the outfielder when he was with the Astros earlier in the offseason. Martinez will head to Triple-A Toledo to try and join the Tigers sometime this season.
