The NBA trade deadline is just over four days away and the Houston Rockets will be mentioned many times this coming week. We have recapped the latest rumors a few weeks ago, and other times as well. As you see in the title, this is our fourth update, and we will be over all the rumors and trades (if they occur) as the deadline approaches.
Jonathan Feigen (Houston Chronicle) says the Rockets are expected to be as “active as ever” at this year’s trade deadline.
The Rockets are expected to be as active as ever in talks and as likely to make a move by next Thursday’ deadline as they were before their run to the All-Star break.
General manager Daryl Morey might have been tempted to predict he would sit this one out for a variety of reasons, but his track record would argue otherwise.
As Feigen also points out, Rockets GM Daryl Morey said last year he didn’t expect to make a deal, but that clearly wasn’t the case as they (surprisingly) dealt Patrick Patterson to the Kings, and shipped Marcus Morris to the Suns.
Morey has yet to let a trade deadline pass without making a move, and the Rockets could certainly use some help if they were to go on a serious playoff run. They are likely in the market for a wing defender who can shoot the three-ball well. Francisco Garcia hasn’t been as successful as the Rockets had hoped and the Rockets hope to replace him with a better defender and shooter. Garcia himself cannot be traded without his permission as both he and Aaron Brooks were given the right to block trades when they signed their one-year deals this offseason.
Omer Asik is a popular name (likely) on the market, though his trade window may have passed according to some reports. Though Morey himself has said Asik is likely to stick around, I expect him to be traded if the right offer is presented.
Steve Kyler (Basketball Insiders) says the Rockets have had their eyes on Ersan Ilyasova all season long. Ilyasova has struggled a bit this season and makes around $8 million each of the next three seasons, something that Morey likely would not want to commit for a player of Ilyasova’s caliber. Though the Rockets have also had interest in Ilyasova in the past, a deal between the Rockets and Bucks would be hard to consummate considering both team’s needs and salary cap issues.
Jeremy Lin has been mentioned a few times, and one team interested may be the New York Knicks according to several reports. Both ESPN’s David Thorpe and Stephen A. Smith have mentioned the possibility of Linsanity and Asik heading to the Knicks in exchange for a deal comprised of Tyson Chandler and Iman Shumpert. This could be just a case of New York media members spewing, but you never know what Morey is thinking.
This will be Morey’s seventh trade deadline with the Rockets and I fully expect him to continue his streak of making deals at the deadline.
