With the offseason in full swing, I’ll try and recap the latest small tidbits of Astros information each week. The pieces of big news will receive its own articles but all small information will be recapped in Houston Astros News and Notes on each Friday.

Mark Appel underwent an emergency appendectomy last Thursday but should be ready for camp.

“Mark will be fine. He will report to camp on time. Once he arrives in Spring Training, we’ll see where he is at health-wise and take it from there. We anticipate that he will either be ready to work out at the start of camp or very close to ready.”

A week later it appears things are going pretty well.

- The Astros have added close to $35 million in salaries this offseason, and seem to be primed for a much improved season. The 2014 25-man roster’s payroll will likely come in around $44 once the season begins. Current Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez is the Astros third highest paid player at $5.5 million, which should bring the team’s actually payroll to $50 million. Evan Drellich added a note on some new Astros signees.

Jesse Crain is still a few weeks away from throwing off a mound. Crain is coming off biceps surgery in October and is likely to miss the beginning of the season. We should know more about his status in the coming month.

The Astros have added a second DSL team, taking the total of Astros minor league affiliates to nine, which is tied for the most in baseball. With that, the Astros also promoted former coach Carlos Alfonso to international development coordinator and special assignment scout. Luhnow is excited about the new move.
