Houston Astros News And Notes: Astros Likely To Meet With Nolan Ryan Soon

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

With the offseason in full swing, I’ll try and recap the latest small tidbits of Astros information each week. The pieces of big news will receive its own articles but all small information will be recapped in Houston Astros News and Notes on each Friday.

According to Jose de Jesus Ortiz (Houston Chronicle), Astros owner Jim Crane plans to meet with Nolan Ryan sometime in the near future to see if the Hall Of Famer is interested in joining the Astros in some capacity.

Ryan played 9 of his 27 seasons for the Astros and was a special assistant to Drayton McLane for five seasons. Ryan owns both the AAA Round Rock Express and AA Corpus Christi Hooks. Just this past fall, Ryan resigned from his position as CEO with the Texas Rangers, after being with the club since leaving the Astros in 2008. Nolan is the father of current Astros president Reid Ryan.

There seems to be a mutual interest in a relationship between the two parties. Jim Crane had some positive words to say about Ryan.

“Certainly, I think we can certainly make room for Nolan Ryan. We’ll see how that works with the business side and the baseball side. We hope to visit with him about it pretty soon. We really don’t have anything done yet. I think there’s some interest from Nolan if it’s the right opportunity for him and if it’s what he wants to do. He’s very accomplished and he’s done a lot of great things and he’ll certainly be a great addition to the team if we could do it.”

Of course Reid Ryan would love to work with his dad if everything works out.

“I don’t think it’s any great secret that I would love to have my dad work with the Houston Astros. But it’s really up to Jim and him to figure out if there’s a fit there.”
