Houston Astros News And Notes: Minor League Coaches Finalized And More

With the offseason in full swing, I’ll try and recap the latest small tidbits of Astros information each week. The pieces of big news will receive its own articles but all small information will be recapped in Houston Astros News and Notes on each Friday.

The Astros announced their minor league coaching staff for the upcoming season. Here’s the list of managers. (To view the full list of minor league coaches, click here)

Triple-A Oklahoma City – Tony DeFrancesco

Double-A Corpus Christi – Keith Bodie

High-A Lancaster – Rodney Linares

Low-A Quad Cities – Omar Lopez

Short Season Tri-City – Ed Romero

Rookie Greeneville – Josh Bonifay

Rookie Gulf Coast League – Marty Malloy

Dominican Summer League – Johan Maya

It’s a great sign that the Astros are keeping the coaches that led them to their successful seasons in 2013. DeFrancesco coached the Astros for a bit in 2012, and is well respected amongst Astros players, staff, and fans. Many young players enjoy playing for the manager and learn a lot from him before coming up to the major league level. Bodie is also popular amongst the fans in Corpus Christi.

There are two Astros potentially headed to arbitration. Jose de Jesus Ortiz (Houston Chronicle) updated us last night on the status of both Jason Castro and Jesus Guzman.

We should hear more on their status shortly. In Castro’s situation, the Astros will also consider an extension with the All-Star catcher. Several teams have inquired about his status, but the Astros would like to keep him. However, if a team is willing to overpay, I’m sure Astros GM Jeff Luhnow will be all over it.

The Astros also announced the starting times for their games this season. Of note, Opening Day against the New York Yankees will start at 6:10 PM on April 1st. Click here to see the rest of the schedule.
