Houston Rockets Power Rankings Update Through Week 10

The Houston Rockets went 1-1 for the week (Monday-Sunday), beating the Knicks while losing to the Kings. This week’s average rank for these publications is 8.3, while last week it was 7. Since these power rankings come out throughout the day on Monday, our national power rankings post will come out early Tuesday every week.

Note: National power rankings don’t take into account any of Monday’s NBA action

The Rockets are undoubtedly enjoying this leisurely start to 2014 after a chaotic December ended with a deflating home loss to Sacramento in their 2013 finale. Who knew a two-point escape at home over the Knicks — given what New York pulled off in San Antonio and Dallas — would feel so good?

CBS Sports (Matt Moore)

Ranked – 10 | Last Week – 5

Clocked by OKC, beaten at home by the Kings (for crying out loud), squeaking by the Knicks. Are the Rockets the worst good team in the West?

Yahoo Sports (Marc J. Spears)

Ranked – 7 | Last Week – 7

Dwight Howard faces the Lakers again on Wednesday, but won’t return to play them in Los Angeles for the first time until Feb. 19.

Ranked – 10 | Last Week – 9

Houston (22-13)
Pace: 98.0 (9), OffRtg: 107.5 (3), DefRtg: 102.9 (16), NetRtg: +4.7 (8)
James Harden has scored in double-figures in the fourth quarter of each of the last five games, but the Rockets rank 29th in fourth-quarter defense. They gave up 30 fourth-quarter points to the Kings on Tuesday and might have a three-game losing streak if it weren’t for a dumb shot and dumb foul by the Knicks on Friday. Omer Asik has now missed the last 16 games with his mysterious knee injury.
This week: vs. LAL, @ ATL, @ WAS

USA Today (combination of writers)

Ranked – 8 | Last Week – 6

Omer Asik is listed as having a leg injury. Surely that is the only reason he is not playing.

Maybe “consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds” but the up-and-down rockets sure could use some, as the only thing they seem to do consistently is have rough fourth quarters and lose because of them. Houston heads out on a four game road trip starting this week.
