Week 16 - Houston Texans vs. Denver Broncos: Game Breakdown

The Houston Texans lost their 13th straight game against the Denver Broncos Sunday afternoon, succumbing to the awesomeness of Peyton Manning.  The final score was 13-37.

I’d like to say that this gets easier week to week and as we get one step closer to the end of the season, but it doesn’t.  The Texans play was just awful.  We had no running game, barely a passing game and our defense was even worse than expected. Keshawn Martin scored the only touchdown for the Texans on a 15 yd. pass from Matt Schaub, who ended the game with 18/37 passes completed and two interceptions.  Deji Karim and Dennis Johnson couldn’t do anything on the ground averaging 3.8 and 2.4 yards per carry respectively.

And can we please talk about our defense?  Good lord.  Apologies in advance to J. J. Watt, but we are not good.  At all.  For a defense who plays so much man coverage we give opposing receivers about a 10 yd. cushion to work with and when you’re playing a quarterback like Manning with receivers like Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas and Jacob Tamme… yikes.  Peyton Manning absolutely shredded our defense to the tune of 32/51, 400 yds., 4 TDs, and 0 INTs.  Not to mention he broke the single-season touchdown record scoring his 51st against the Texans surpassing Tom Brady‘s 50 put up in 2007.  Shiloh Keo and Brice McCain were picked on all day long.  I said this while watching the game to some friends, but it’s like our secondary thinks they’re playing Madden and that their “hit sticks” will do all the work for them.  No wrapping up, bouncing off guys… brutal.

We’ve moved on from our head coach, now it’s time to evaluate the rest of the coaching staff.  I would be shocked if Wade Phillips was still here next year.  Correction: I’d be angry.  When is the last time you honestly saw our defense be completely dominant?  I’m ready for a gutting.  Let’s just get it over with.

As I’m sure you’re all very aware, it’s simply heartbreaking to watch this team anymore.  Every week it gets worse, but at least we have something to gain from this pitiful display that has been the Texans’ 2013 season.  We’re one step closer to that number one pick.  We need either a win by the Washington Redskins against the New York Giants or a loss for us against the Tennessee Titans next week and we will have clinched the 1st pick in the 2014 draft.

With the way we’re playing, I’m feeling pretty good about our chances.
