Omer Asik Now Likely To Stay A Houston Rocket

After weeks of trying to figure out which jersey Omer Asik will wear come December 20th, it appears as if he will continue to wear Rockets-Red for the time being. The tweets courtesy of Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Over the last few days it appeared as if the Rockets were going to be able to pull off a deal. Rumors indicated that the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Atlanta Hawks were all pursuing Asik at times these past few weeks. Even teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Charlotte Bobcats were linked to Asik one way or another.

From the Sixers, reports indicated Rockets were looking for either Thaddeus Young or Spencer Hawes along with a pick. Sam Hinkie, former assistant to Daryl Morey, is now the GM in Phildaelphia and knows how Morey and the Rockets like to deal. It appears as if the two friends weren’t able to connect the dots on a potential deal.

The Celtics appeared as if they may have been close to a deal, but the Celtics were reportedly weary on which picks to include in a potential deal along with Brandon Bass and Courtney Lee. Whatever the case maybe, the Rockets decided to hold off on all trades for the time being.

Just because the Rockets didn’t deal Asik today, doesn’t mean he will end the season with the Rockets. There’s still a good chance the Rockets move him in a deadline deal, when teams are more aware of how their future looks.

For now, the Rockets keep Asik and he will likely backup Dwight Howard as the season goes on. With Asik on the team, the Rockets have elite defense at the center position for all 48 minutes of a game.

It could be worse!
