Houston Astros News And Notes From The Past Week

This past week is exactly what Astros fans have been waiting for the last few months. Obviously the big news of the week was the acquisition of Dexter Fowler, but there is a lot more to be excited about.

Astros GM Jeff Luhnow has been talking to the media lately and had some interesting things to say regarding the next few weeks. Luhnow spoke with the Houston Chronicle and also was on SportsTalk790 for an hour-long radio appearance on Astroline which is hosted by Milo Hamilton. Here’s what Luhnow had to say to Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle.

We have several conversations ongoing both regarding trades as well as signings. I just feel like there’s less of an, ‘OK, let’s wait ’til we get to the winter meetings,’ than there has been in the past. It’s part due to the fact that tonight, even, we’re still getting some signings reported. I think there’s less of that mentality — ‘Oh, we’re only a few days away, why don’t we wait and shelve it ’til we get there?’ Conversations are ongoing. I feel good — things can change from one moment to the next — but I feel good that we’re going to be in position to be able to do another transaction. Whether it’s before or during the winter meetings, or maybe multiple (transactions).

It seems clear the Astros will be making one, if not several moves over the course of the next week or two.

Besides the potential moves next week, Luhnow also spoke a bit about certain prospect. Luhnow was asked about some underrated prospects and the first name mentioned was Rudy Owens. “I think this is a guy, left-handed guy who could be in our rotation, could be in our bullpen next year. And he’s a name that nobody knows about because he really didn’t get much notoriety last year,” Luhnow said. Luhnow also mentioned that he was likely in line to be the next SP called up, but his foot injury ended his season early.

Another two top prospects, Carlos Correa and Mark Appel, were also brought up in the conversation. Luhnow said that both prospects should see significant time in Corpus Christi, the Astros Double-A affiliate. If true, it wouldn’t shock me to see those two prospects in Houston sometime in 2015.

For now, we wait and see as the Winter Meetings are next week. The Rule 5 draft will take place on Thursday, and the Astros will likely use the pick on a player, or potentially trade the pick. Whatever the case may be, expect some exciting action over the course of the next week.
