Astros News And Notes: 11/8

With the offseason in full swing, I’ll try and recap the latest small tidbits of Astros information each week. The pieces of big news will receive it’s own articles but all small information will be recapped in Astros News and Notes on each Friday.

Matt Dominguez was named Astros’ Wilson Defensive Player of the Year award for the club this season. Three other Astros were nominated for GIBBY awards for the 2013 season. Brandon Barnes was nominated for best hitting performance this season after hitting for the cycle against the Mariners on July 19th. Jason Castro was nominated for breakout hitter after hitting .276 with 18 home runs, 36 doubles, and 56 RBI in 2013. Robbie Grossman was nominated for top play of the season for his leaping grab too rob Chris Young of a home run in extra innings.

Dave Clark was hired by the Detroit Tigers this past week. Earlier in the week it was announced that Clark was going to be the manager of the Double-A team of the Milwaukee Brewers but a day later Clark jumped ship to the Tigers. Clark will be the 3B coach and outfield instructor for Brad Ausmus‘ squad. Ausmus and Clark overlapped during their time with the Astros and that was likely a big factor in Ausmus’s choice.

Proposition 2 would have turned the Astrodome into an humongous exhibition and event space, but voters decided earlier this week that the Astrodome should be demolished in a 53%-47% vote. The county commission still needs to vote to go ahead with the demolition but it doesn’t look like the “Eighth Wonder of the World” will stay standing much longer. Voters decided it wasn’t worth $8 a year, or about two packages of Oreo cookies, to keep the Astrodome somewhat alive. Oh well!

The Astros will play two exhibition games in San Antonio on March 28th-29th. The Ryan Sanders Baseball group along with the Astros and Rangers will make the official announcements later today. The Astros do have a scheduled game in Veracruz, Mexico on the 29th so the team will likely split its players among the two cities. Both San Antonio games are expected to be played at the Alamodome.
