It’s been one long season and it will hopefully continue even longer. The Houston Dynamo will face the D.C. United today in a game that will determine their schedule for the next few weeks. As of this morning, the Dynamo needed one team from above them in the standings (Chicago, Montreal, and New England) to take a loss. The Montreal Impact had a game on Saturday and they were surprisingly defeated by Toronto FC. With the Impact’s loss, the Dynamo just need a win today to secure a playoff berth.
Also on Saturday, the Philadelphia Union were defeated by Sporting Kansas City. The loss knocked the Union out of playoff contention leaving the Dynamo as the only other team currently out of the playoffs in the Eastern Conference with a shot at the playoffs. The Sporting Kansas City victory gave them the 1st spot in the Eastern Conference just ahead of the New York Red Bulls who face the Chicago Fire on Sunday.
There’s still a chance the Dynamo can enter the postseason if they settle with a draw against D.C. United. If the new England Revolution lose to the Columbus Crew a Dynamo draw would also give the Dynamo a playoff berth. The Dynamo were in third place before a worse case scenario occurred last week. A Dynamo loss to the Red Bulls, plus a victory by the Impact, Revolution, and Fire knocked the Dynamo out of the top-five. Their’s still a chance the Dynamo could finish in the third place, but a win will suffice for a chance at the cup. If the Dynamo finish in fourth or fifth in the Conference, they will play the other fourth or fifth seed for a one-match playoff later this week.
The Dynamo have already beaten the United twice this season and one more win today is all they need. Today’s game starts at 12:30 PM CT and can be seen on NBC.
