To the delight of many Houston area fans, the Texans announced that Case Keenum will get the start on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Texans made the decision on Wednesday night and informed the team earlier today. With Matt Schaub out for Sunday, the Texans decided to give Keenum the start over T.J. Yates.
Keenum has been on the inactive list all season but gets the nod on Sunday. Keenum and Yates split reps throughout the week but Keenum had been talked about a lot more by the coaches and players this week. Keenum failed to beat out Yates in the preseason for the number two QB spot, but had a great performance throwing for 482 passing yards while completing 34/50 passes for three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
The reason many were clamoring for Keenum was due to his terrific QB play at the University of Houston. Keenum threw for over 19,217 yards with the Cougars and left as the NCAA’s all time leading passer. Keenum threw for 155 TD’s and 46 INT’s in his 5-year career at UH and completed 69.4% of his passes. Texans fans hope he repeat some of his Cougar magic for the Texans.
Keenum will have a tough task against the Chiefs. The Chiefs have one of the best defenses in the game and it starts with their front-seven. The Chiefs have 31 sacks through six games including 10 just last week against the Raiders. Tamba Hali and Dontari Poe have mauled quarterbacks this year and have combined for 11 sacks. Justin Houston has racked up 9.5 sacks from the OLB spot. Derrick Johnson has two sacks and 44 total tackles at ILB. The Chiefs secondary has also been great this season allowing just 190 passing yards a game and already have 10 interceptions. The Chiefs will surely bring lots of pressure towards Keenum and force him to make tough throws.
The Texans made a surprising move going with Keenum and we will see if it pays off come Sunday. What do you think Texans fans? Too bold or the right move?
